Stewart L. Phillips

January 6, 1946 — December 22, 2022

Stewart L. Phillips, 76, of Canaan, VT, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at his home. He was born in Colebrook, NH on January 6, 1946 the son of the late Bert and Evelyn (Holden) Phillips and was the 9th of 19 children. He first started school at the Hollow School, which is now the property of Bruce and Louise Owen, and continued his education at the Cedar Brook School in Stewartstown. He graduated from Colebrook Academy with the Class of 1964.  He later attended training in Oklahoma to become a farrier. Stewart was probably riding a horse before he could walk. He was skidding wood with a horse at the age of 7 and was raking hay with a horse when he was 12. He continued working with horses alongside his father and brothers and then moved to logging with his own skidder and mowing the roadsides for the State and numerous towns. Stewart worked as a farrier for many years. His favorite hobby was competing and pulling horses, most notably with his favorite pair Doc and Bill. He made many friends along the way. Stewart also loved his dogs, and made sure all of his Australian Shepherd x Border Collie puppies went to good homes.  The folks who bought his puppies became good friends, and many more were loved like family.  Stewart loved to sing, and always enjoyed telling a good joke.

He leaves behind his life partner, Heidi Marquis; stepchildren Katie and Albert; siblings Grace, Carlene, Nellie, Doris, Carl, Wayne, Sue, Donna, Stubby, Mike and Nancy; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends. He was predeceased by his siblings Barbara, Richard, Roy, Ellen, Harold, John and Dorothy.

Funeral Services are being planned for early spring, location, date and time for which will be announced in the coming weeks. Stewart requested any donations in his memory please be made to David’s House, 461 Mt. Support Road, Lebanon, NH, 03766. Arrangements are entrusted to Bryant Funeral Homes & Crematory, Berlin and Gorham, NH. Memories and condolences may be shared online at www.bryantfuneralhome.net.
