Russell B. Viger

Russell “Russ” Viger, 84, of Berlin, NH passed away peacefully on April 28, 2026, at his home surrounded by loved ones. He was born on July 26, 1941, in Berlin, NH, the son of the late Omer Viger and Simone (Gagnon) Viger. A lifelong New Hampshire resident, with a brief time in Manchester, he was proud to call Milan his forever home. Russ was employed by several local carpenters before being self-employed for many years, during which he touched the lives of many who were fortunate to have had his skilled carpentry beautify their home. Russ had the ability to build anything out of wood with his commonsense approach in tackling any project.

Family was the most important aspect of his beloved life; Russell would write notes to his wife, Helen, prior to their marriage on July 7, 1962. Russ loved to go on drives throughout New England with his daughters and granddaughters - showing them the lighthouses of Maine, and enjoying an ice cream along the way (always needed!). Building Christmas wreaths every year with his children and grandchildren was a day he cherished and greatly looked forward to, preparing for it the week in advance by collecting pine boughs himself.

Russ was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved spending time outdoors and camping. He truly respected nature and the wildlife around him. In retirement Russ and his wife, Helen, enjoyed their summer residence at The Bluffs (Danforth Bay, Freedom, NH) where they created a family of close friends around his fire ring, playing games together, going for walks and local outings, and on the tennis court. He would go for a walk at home or at camp, on a dirt road every day for 2 miles, welcoming others to join him in his peaceful stroll, oftentimes inclusive of “visiting a man about a horse.”

Russell is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Helen (Guerin) Viger of Milan, NH; daughters Donna Cotnoir and husband Donald of Pembroke, NH; Denise Michaud and husband Tom of Gorham, NH; grandchildren Katie, Lauren, Kristen and great-grandson Coleman. Russ is also survived by siblings Gerard and Yvette Viger of Groveton, NH; Laurent Viger of Berlin, NH; David Viger and wife Marcelle of Milan, NH; Maurice Viger of Milan, NH; Paulette Bouchard and husband Gary of Milan, NH; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends, at a day and time still to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Russell’s memory may be made to the Wildlife Heritage Foundation of NH.
