Ronald Paul (Murray) Marquis passed away on October 23, 2026, at the age of 86. Born in Berlin, New Hampshire, on November 15, 1939, he was the son of Dorothy (Murray) Marquis and the grandson of Annie (Sloan) Murray and Oscar W. Murray. A lifelong resident of the Berlin-Gorham area, Ron graduated with high honors from Berlin High School in 1957, was a member of the National Honor Society, and excelled on the school's basketball and baseball teams.

Ron fulfilled a six-year military obligation from 1962 to 1968, serving three years in the National Guard and three years in the Army Reserve. He began his career in Brown Company's woods operations, working with various logging contractors before moving into the paper industry, where he worked for Brown Company, James River Corporation, and Crown Vantage. During his career, he worked as a papermaker at the Riverside Mill and eventually retired from the shipping department at the Cascade Mill. He was a longtime member of Local 75.

Ronnie was an avid sports fan whose childhood idols were Ted Williams and Maurice “Rocket” Richard. Hiking was his true passion, and he completed both the Appalachian Trail and Vermont's Long Trail. An accomplished hiker and mountain climber, he summited all 48 of New Hampshire's 4,000-foot peaks three times, across all seasons of the year, including once with his beloved dog, Teddy. He was a proud member of the New England 4,000-Footer Club, having climbed all 67 peaks on its list. His accomplishments also included the New England Hundred Highest, the Adirondack Forty-Sixers of New York State, and the Northeast 111, encompassing many of the highest peaks throughout New England and New York.

Ron is survived by his brother Steven Marquis, Steven's wife, Paulette, and their son Nathan; his sister-in-law Tina Marquis, whom he could count on for anything; and his nephew Kevin Marquis, with whom he shared a particularly close bond. Ron affectionately nicknamed Kevin “the Wildman” at a young age, a title he proudly passed along to his great-great-nephew Brody, whom he believed was ready to carry the torch. He is also survived by Kevin's wife, Tareena; his great-nieces Kylie and Britteny, whom he spent many years cheering on at sporting events throughout New Hampshire; his nephew Shawn Marquis and Shawn's wife, Erin; cousins; many friends; and his beloved dog, Aukie. Ron was predeceased by his brother Reginald “Reggie” Marquis and his beloved dogs, Teddy and Jasper.

In his later years, when his knees could no longer carry him into the mountains, Ronnie remained a familiar presence throughout the community. He continued exploring the wilderness in his side-by-side until just a few months before his passing. When he wasn't out exploring, he could often be found reading the newspaper, socializing, spending time with his dog, or enjoying a nap at one of his favorite local spots. Whether on the hiking trails or around town, Ronnie formed lasting connections with people from all walks of life. Brief encounters often grew into friendships that lasted decades, reaching well beyond the local community to places throughout the country and Canada. With his endless stories, playful humor, and unmistakable personality, Ronnie had a way of making people laugh and turning strangers into friends. He will be deeply missed by the many people whose lives he touched.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Ron's neighbors, acquaintances, and friends who always looked out for him and generously helped with lawn care, snow removal, and other needs. He was fortunate to have so many top-shelf people in his corner. A special thank-you goes to the staff at Coos County Nursing Home for the kindness, compassion, and support they provided during Ron's final days. The care he received, the steady flow of visitors, and the comfort he experienced were everything his family could have hoped for.

In accordance with Ron's wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. Interment will take place at New City Cemetery in Berlin, New Hampshire. The family extends its sincere appreciation to Bryant Funeral Homes for the care, guidance, and professionalism provided during this difficult time. Those wishing to make a donation in Ron's memory may do so through the Jimmy Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168.
