Richard Sherman Garris, 81, of Berlin, NH and formerly of Newton and Stillwater, NJ, passed away at his home on February 22, 2026. Richard was born in Newton on July 21, 1944, a son of the late Harold C. and Doris M. (House) Garris. He graduated Newton High School class of 1963. He entered the United States Air Force and later entered the NH Army National Guard and sent overseas to stations in Greece, South Vietnam, and twice to Germany, serving a total of 20 years. In addition to numerous certifications obtained in the armed services, Richard graduated from Emerson College with a Bachelors Degree in Education and Theater Arts. After working at several schools, he took a position at Berlin High School where he taught English, German Language, and Theater.
Richard enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities, including marksmanship, hunting, swimming, fishing, and skiing. He coached tennis for many years at Berlin High School and was a member of the teacher's union.
Richard is survived by his partner Judith Lynch, and many friends and former colleagues. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Roger.
A Graveside Service will be held at the Old Stillwater Cemetery, Stillwater, NJ on Friday May 1, 2026 at 10am. Donations in Richard's memory may be made to Father John’s Animal House, 50 Father John’s Lane, Lafayette, NJ 07848, or to an animal rescue organization of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Homes & Crematory, Berlin and Gorham, NH. Memories and condolences may be shared online at www.bryantfuneralhome.net.
