Norman R. Littlehale, 95, of Wilsons Mills, Maine, passed away peacefully after a long and well-lived life. Norman was born on August 20, 1930, in Lewiston, Maine, and spent most of his life in the close-knit community of Wilsons Mills. He attended Livermore High School, graduating class of 1949. Norman shared 70 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Muriel Littlehale, until her passing in 2023. Together they built a life grounded in hard work, family, and a deep appreciation for the North Woods they called home.
Norman dedicated 40 years of service to the Maine Department of Transportation. In 1976, he and Muriel began a new chapter when they established and operated the Aziscoos Valley Campground. For 40 years they welcomed visitors from near and far to experience the natural beauty of the region they cherished.
A true woodsman, Norman was an avid trapper and spent many seasons in the outdoors with his longtime friend, Elmer Millett. He also enjoyed farming, raising sheep and caring for the land he loved, including making maple syrup each spring. A skilled carpenter, Norman constructed numerous buildings throughout the community. He and Muriel also shared a love of travel and enjoyed exploring places beyond their corner of Maine.
Norman was deeply devoted to the Wilsons Mills community. He served on the town’s Board of Selectmen and played a leading role in organizing the town’s Sesquicentennial celebration in 1975. He will also be remembered for his remarkable gift for storytelling, often captivating listeners with tales of the woods, the town, and the people who shaped its history. Among his favorite stories was recalling the day he waited patiently for President Dwight D. Eisenhower to pass through town.
Norman is survived by his daughters, Angela Bennett and her husband, Warren, and Emily Staley; his grandson, Nicholas Staley and his wife, Melanie; and his three great-grandchildren, Owen, Austin, and Lila. He is also survived by his niece, Loretta Littlehale, and former son-in-law, Frank Staley. He was predeceased by his wife, Muriel Littlehale; his parents, Lester Littlehale Sr. and Grace Gardner; his stepmother, Gwendolyn Littlehale; and his brother, Lester Littlehale Jr.
