Bernard W. “Sonny” Balon, 88, of Gorham, passed away on January 13, 2024 at his home. He was born on January 16, 1935 in Marion Heights, PA, the son of Walter & Mary (Marshalek) Balon. He was raised in Pennsylvania by his mother and step father, John Krajnak, and educated in local schools. After graduating from Mt. Carmel High School in Mt. Carmel, PA, he moved to Connecticut, then married his wife Virginia in New York. Sonny and Virginia resided together in Connecticut prior to their relocating to Gorham, NH.

Prior to his retirement, Sonny had been employed as a professional firefighter for the City of Danbury, CT and also as an electrician, a jack of all trades. He was also the Superintendent of Fire Alarms for the City of Danbury. He was a US Army veteran who enjoyed woodworking and metal detecting in his free time.

Family includes his children, Christine Kokinchak and husband Mark of Southbury, CT, and Robert Balon and wife Roberta of Gorham; grandchildren Bernard, Richard, Kyle, and Cameron; a great-grandchild Charles; siblings Margaret Polakowski of Catawissa, PA, Barbara Bewick of Atlas, PA, Marianne Menapace of Sunbury, PA, and Rosemarie Mummaw of Natalie, PA. He was predeceased by his wife Virginia (Wywada) Balon in 2014.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 22, 2024 at 10 AM at Holy Family Church in Gorham. Interment will be in the Holy Family Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call from 8:30 – 9:30 AM at the Bryant Funeral Home, 1 Promenade Street, Gorham, prior to the mass. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make donations in Sonny’s memory to a charity of their choice. Memories and condolences may be shared online at www.bryantfuneralhome.net
