Roger R. Goupil, 90, of Berlin passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at the Coos Country Nursing Home, with family by his side. He was born in St. Leon, P.Q., Canada on June 19, 1923, eldest child of Adelard and Germaine DeServe Goupil. Following graduation from Berlin High School in 1942, Roger enlisted in the Army. He became a U.S. citizen while residing at Columbia Air Base in South Carolina. He went on to serve honorably in the European Theatre as a medic. Roger was a proud veteran and member of VFW White Mountain Post 2520. He married Colleen (Sweet) in 1948 and the couple recently celebrated their 65th anniversary. Roger was a member of St. Kieran Church, now known as Good Shepherd Parish. He worked for the Brown Company where he retired after 39 years, finishing as a power and steam operator. He also worked as a self-employed trucker hauling wood for the mill. After retirement, Roger spent many summers at Roger's Campground in Lancaster and winters in Florida. He was always happy to leave the cold and snow behind. Even the loss of one home to Hurricane Andrew didn't stop him from going south. When not working around his yard, Roger enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing cards, and socializing. The highlight of his winter stay was visits from his children and grandchildren. Twenty years later, Roger returned to the North Country full time, eventually settling in Gorham. Roger's other interests included reading; watching sports; especially his favorite teams, the Bruins, Patriots and Red Sox; listening to music; and motorcycling with his brothers. A man of many talents, Roger was a do-it-yourself handyman, carpenter and mechanic. Throughout his life he was always working on one project or another and was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends and neighbors. Roger's family was the center of his life. He was a devoted husband, dad, grandfather and brother. He will be remembered as a hardworking family man well liked by all who knew him during his long life. Roger is survived by his wife of 65 years, Colleen (Sweet) Goupil of Berlin, two daughters Jacqueline McCready and husband Richard (Magoo) of Milan, Donna Perry and husband Courtland of So. Hero, Vt.; five grandchildren; Courtland R. and Chad Perry, Melissa Chevarie, Stacey Adams, and Shanna Goupil; five great-grandchildren, Caleb and Cameron Chevarie, Ty and Abby Adams, and Courtland D. Perry; two brothers Leopold Goupil of Gorham and Richard Goupil and wife Noella of Gorham; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Roger Goupil, two sisters Fleurette Ryan and Yolande Bilodeau. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 21 at the Bryant Funeral Home, 180 Hillside Ave. , Berlin at 1 p.m.. Interment will follow in the New City Cemetery will full military honors.
