Laureen Anna (Marois) Poulin

May 31, 1947 — July 29, 2017

Berlin, NH

Laureen Anna (Weenie) (Marois) Poulin passed into the wonder and joy of the next life on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at age 70 after a brief battle with stage 4 cancer that took over her body.

Laureen was born on May 31, 1947 in Berlin, NH the daughter of Philippe C. Marois and Verna (Clinch) Marois. While she had French-Canadian heritage with Marois and Simoneau lineage, she also had ties to a Scottish and Irish past with the names McCurdy and Clinch traced back some 500 years. She was a lifelong resident in Berlin now living in her childhood home at 576 Glen Avenue and was a graduate of Berlin High School in the Class of 1965.

On June 3, 1967, she married Roger Poulin of Berlin and spent 50+ years as husband and wife, but more so, as best friends and companions.

Laureen was a natural care-giver both professionally and personally. In her 36 years as director of housekeeping and laundry at the Coos County Nursing Home, she made a difference in many peoples lives. "I wasnt a nurse, but my employees and I were caregivers to hundreds of people and we would become very attached to them in their lives."

In reflections before her passing, many of her former employees said that she was one of the most caring people to work for. One even said that she was his "rock" when he was battling with cancer. At her retirement party three years ago, the nursing home administrator said that when a budget was due in her office from departments on a particular date, Laureen was well known to deliver her budget about two weeks before the deadline.

On a personal level, her mother, Verna, always called her "my angel" because she was always nearby to assist her in her final years. She was the ultimate care giver when her father, Philippe, suffered from Alzheimers disease and lived at the nursing home where she worked. "It was difficult to watch him lose ground every day."

Laureen had a knack for arts and crafts learning that skill from her mother and often sharing it with her sister, Gloria. In her final days, she was found sewing small fabric hearts that she wanted to give to relatives and friends as a token to remember her. "When they look at them, I hope they remember me."

Laureen was a bingo fanatic enjoying the fun of being out with people about as much as the chance to win a few dollars from the game. The same held true for her trips to a casino. She also welcomed gatherings at Christmas especially when her family would play a unique brand of a Yankee swap that her mother founded called "Crazy Christmas." For many, Laureen was known as "Weenie," a childhood nickname that remained through the years.

Laureen was a Catholic and treasured the faith that she shared with her husband, Roger. While fighting her battle with cancer, Roger suffered a stroke and has had extensive rehab. One of her last wishes is that people keep Roger in their prayers as he faces life without her.

"She was the strongest person I ever met," remembers her brother, whose birth name is Daniel but who was lovingly called "Danny" by his sister. "When struggles would come her way, thats when she was at her strongest."

"I dont know how she does it, but she is always positive finding the bright side of things," said her sister, Gloria. Even in her final visits with her, Laureen, looked to the positive even with a bit of humor. "Im going to be cremated in a biodegradable shaker container," said Laureen. "That way if you all want a bit of me, all you have to do is shake it!"

Laureen is survived by her husband of 51 years, Roger Poulin, her son her son, Eric Poulin and partner, Kent Walsh of Berlin, New Hampshire, and son Wayne Jenks and partner, Michael Jenks of Springfield, Massachusetts, and She is also survived by her only grandchild, Ryan Poulin of Orlando, Florida.

Laureen leaves behind her favorite sister, Gloria Ward, and husband, Paul of Swampscott, Massachusetts and her favorite "little brother," Danny and wife, Denise (Boucher) of Poland Spring, Maine. She also leaves behind the many people she worked with at the Coos County Nursing Home who were more like family than coworkers.

She was especially loved by many in-laws on the Poulin side of the family and easily became one of the favorite aunts for many nieces and nephews. In her final years, she was also comforted by Benny, a very energetic Schnoodle.

She will be welcome to her next life by more than 3000 family members documented in her family lineage with names such as Marois, Simoneau, Gagne, Ouellet, Clinch, McCurdy, Couture and others.
