George P Cloutier

June 30, 1923 — February 17, 2019

George Paul Cloutier passed away at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital on Sunday, February 17, 2019, at the age of 95 years, 7 months and 17 days. He was born in Berlin, New Hampshire on June 30, 1923, and has been a City resident his entire life. He attended Guardian Angel School and graduated from Berlin High School with the Class of 1941. During World War II George served in the U.S. Army and saw action in France and Germany. After his military service he returned to Berlin and worked for several local companies including Singer, Tetley Tea and Ware Knitters, before joining the Brown Company (later James River Corporation) in 1956 where he worked in many departments including 20 years in the Timekeeping Department, until his retirement in 1986. In retirement, George enjoyed many happy years traveling to visit family and friends and following his favorite sports teams.

He and his wife Rolande (Bedard) were married on June 24, 1950 at Ste. Anne Church and together they raised their 2 sons in the home he built on Willard Street. A lover of sports in general and baseball in particular, George played ball for many years through high school and well into his 40s with several local teams. Known as "Lefty", he excelled as a pitcher and was scouted by the then Boston Braves. He was a coach for Notre Dame High School and Little League teams for many years and also served as an umpire. George was an avid and loyal Boston Red Sox fan his entire life and his life-long devotion was rewarded in 2004 when the Sox won their first World Series since 1918.

His love of facts and details was legendary among his family and friends. He could always be counted on to remember some obscure fact or date concerning anything from sports to weather. In his later years he enjoyed compiling weather statistics and sharing this information with anyone who would ask.

In addition to Rolande, his loving and devoted wife of nearly 69 years, George is survived by his son Robert, of Trumbull, CT; his adored grandchildren: Marielle Shpak and husband Chris of Fairfield, CT, and Nicolas Cloutier and wife Megan of Newtown, CT; and six cherished great-grandchildren: Kali, Keira, Ethan, Cassidy, Tristan and Jade. He also leaves his special nieces and nephew Diane Poulin, Rachel Croteau, Denise Thibodeau and Michael Croteau and their spouses; his grand-nephews and nieces who provided him with so much love and joy: Jason, Jennifer, Katie, Andrew, Ryan, Eric, Randy, Kayla and Travis; and his great-grand-nephews and nieces who filled his days with laughter and happiness: Emma, Brody, Brooklyn, Kylie, Austin, Nolan, Charlotte, Ava, Ethan, Tyler, Destiny, Maren, Harper and Finley. He is also survived by cousins Sharon, Scott, and Marc Lefevre and family in Fitchburg, MA. and extended family in CT. In addition, he also leaves his adopted daughter and longtime family friend, Jackie Gagne. Family and friends were always important to George and he cherished the many moments shared with all of them, especially in his later years.

He was preceded in death by his son Richard (Ricky), his parents, Germaine (Cloutier) and Eddie Pelchat, his maternal grandparents who raised him, Trefle and Roseanna (Jobin) Cloutier, his aunt and uncle, Laurence (Cloutier) and Jules Lefevre, his cousin Jerry Lefevre, and his sister- and brother-in-law Lucille (Curly) and Ray Croteau.
