George A Roy

Berlin, NH

George Arthur Roy, a lifelong resident of Berlin and most recently resided at St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Home, passed away Friday evening (June 28, 2013) at Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin, NH. He was 93.

Born on February 21, 1920 in Berlin, NH, he was the son of Mark and Delia (Ouellette) Roy. George attended Berlin Grammar Schools and was a 1939 graduate of Berlin High School.

During World War II, he served in the US Navy and was stationed at the US Naval Air Station, Banana River, Florida.

On August 7, 1943, he married Dorothy Marquis in Rockledge, Florida. They enjoyed 54 years of marriage until her passing on January 19, 1998. He will be remembered as a loving husband who cared for his wife during her battle with Alzheimer's disease; especially during her home confinement in the last three years of her life.

He was employed as head storekeeper at the Burgess Storehouse of Brown Company and retired in 1982 from James River Company.

George was a communicant of St. Kieran's Church now known as St. Anne Church of Good Shepherd Parish in Berlin.

Baseball was George's lifetime passion. He would often be found playing center field and was known for stealing home plate if the opportunity arose. In earlier years, he played baseball for the Berlin Red Sox Travel Team. He was instrumental in founding the Berlin Little League and was active in Berlin Parks and Recreation Sports. He also was an American Legion Baseball Umpire. His all-time favorite baseball team was the "Boston Braves". A highlight of his life was getting a hit off Red Sox pitcher Lefty Grove during batting practice which hit the green monster at Fenway Park.

George was a lifetime member of the Berlin Eagles Club, the VFW and American Legion. Besides his parents, two sisters Flora Gauvin and Olive Coulombe both died before him.

He will be remembered as a loving father who leaves a daughter Helen M. Roy of Berlin and a son Mark G. Roy and his wife Patricia of Alton Bay, NH; a brother Andrew Roy of Arlington, Mass, and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Tuesday, July 2, at St. Anne Church of Good Shepherd Parish in Berlin. The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Kieran's Cemetery in Berlin.

Calling hours will be held from 3:00pm to 7:00pm Monday, July 1 and from 8:30am to 9:30 Tuesday July 2 (prior to the Mass) at Fleury-Patry Funeral Home, 72 High Street, Berlin, NH.
