Mr. Frank Lawrence Bacon, 85, of Milan, NH passed away on Friday March 16, 2007 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin. He was born in Crystal, NH on March 1, 1922 to Edgar and Mildred (Silver) Bacon. He grew up in Dummer Corner and was fond of recalling he attended the one room Sand Hill School. As an enlisted member of the National Guard 197th Battalion Battery F, he served during WW2 in the Philippines and Australia. As a veteran he displayed a lifelong reverence for the American Flag. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic during the construction of Moore Dam and a Mass Pike project. He also worked as a mechanic for area garages before establishing Franks Garage on Main Street in Milan. In operation as an auto repair shop for over 40 years, it was also known as a spot for local retirees to tell tall tales and for kids to have flat bike tires reinflated. He served as a Town of Milan Road Agent for ten years and plowed countless driveways during heavy snow winters. He was also a distributor for Lewiston Bottled Gas. Throughout his life he was an avid reader of history-related books and spent many hours studying old maps. He loved birds, liked small children and tolerated dogs. He was the chief activist in the local skunk relocation program. He especially enjoyed occasions when his family gathered around the large table in the Bacon kitchen. With his wife he took many spur-of-the-moment trips exploring the back roads of New England. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Marcia (Gadwah) Bacon; two daughters Zanita Morin and her husband Robert of Milan and Bronwyn Bashore and her husband Scott of Newburyport, MA; three sons Lance Bacon of Epping, Gregory Bacon and his wife Vicki of Colebrook and Brice Bacon and his wife Lynne of Dummer; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; a sister Dorothy Rich of Dummer; brothers Carl Bacon of Stark, Ray Bacon of Franklin and Donald Bacon of Groveton; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, three sisters Ethel Lang, Edith Egan and Marion Bacon and by a brother Earl Bacon. At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours. A memorial reception will be held at the Dupont-Holmes Post 82 American Legion in Gorham, NH on Sunday March 25, 2007 from 1-4 PM. Those who wish may make donations in his name to the Milan Public Library or to the Day Break Program at the Holiday Center in Berlin. Arrangements are by the Bryant Funeral Home in Berlin.
