Donald G. Roy, Sr.

Mr. Donald G. Roy, Sr. Swobby USN Retired, formerly of 4th Avenue, Berlin, NH passed away on Tuesday January 20, 2009 at the Veterans Hospital in White River Jct, VT. He had been residing at the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield, NH. He was born in Berlin, NH on March 19, 1926 the son of Herbert and Dorothy (Hart) Roy. He attended school in Berlin and Gorham and enlisted in the U.S. Navy Sea Bees at the age of 17. During World War II, he served in the Southern and Northern Pacific Ocean areas. In early 1951, he came home and went to work in the tube mill at Brown Company. He went back into the Navy in 1957 and was a Mech-Crew on the Blimps (Air Ships). In 1962, he was on the Air Craft Carrier USS Essex during the Cuban Blockade, then he did a tour in Viet Nam as a 1st Flight Engineer on a C-121 Air Craft, retiring in 1972. He then worked as a meat cutter at Andys Market in Berlin Mills and as a Security Guard for Brown Company, James River and Crown Vantage, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Kieran Church, now known as Good Shepherd Parish. He was an avid fisherman and hunted in his early years. He was a Life Member of the White Mountain Post #2520 VFW, a Life Member of the DAV Post #8, a Life Member of the Fur Feather and Fin of Gorham, a member of the Eagles 1464, a member of the Naval Fleet Association and the Northern American Fishing Club. He was very handy with his hands, making reproductions of every thing he had seen. He had a sense of humor and had many quick one-liners. He and his wife, Lorraine, camped at Israel River Campground in Jefferson, NH for 27 years. He loved to sit around the camp fires telling Navy stories. His family includes his wife of 60 years Lorraine (Stephenson) Roy of Berlin, NH; sons Gerald and his wife Vivian of Whitefield, NH, Donald Jr. and his wife Betty Jo of Manchester, NH; daughter-in-law Dianne Roy of Berlin, NH; 4 grandchildren Charlene Briggs and husband Rick of Gorham, NH, Marcel Roy and partner Trish of Berlin, NH, Erika Bailey and husband Brian of Berlin, NH, Brandon Roy and fiance Tiffany Carter of Manchester, NH; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers Gordon Roy of Norwalk, OH and Wallace Roy and wife Priscilla of Dummer, NH; many nieces, nephews; good friend Faith Boisvert of Whitefield, NH. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother Bruce of CA and a sister Dolores Hoffman of CA. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday January 26, 2008 at 1:00 PM at the Bryant Funeral Home, 180 Hillside Ave., Berlin. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 12 to 1, prior to the service. Donations in his memory may be made to the DAV or the Lung Foundation.
