Constance P. Leger, 89, of 881 North Rd., Shelburne, NH passed away on Tuesday morning Jan. 13, 2009 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin. She was born in Portland, ME on June 28, 1919 the daughter of Lawrence E. and Helen M. (Day) Philbrook and attended the Shelburne Village School, Gould Academy and the University of Maine at Orono where she obtained a Bachelors Degree. While attending the University of Maine she was a member of AOPI Sorority. She lived several years in Ohio while her husband Eugene was in the US Army Air Corps and returned to Shelburne in 1945, where she has since resided. She was self employed for many years at the Philbrook Farm Inn and taught at the Gorham High School in Gorham, NH. Connie obtained her teaching degree from the University of New Hampshire. She had served on the Shelburne School Board, was Town Clerk in Shelburne for 31 years and was honored by the town for her years of service in 2006. She also served on the Shelburne Heritage Commission and was a longtime member of Winthrop Grange #315, a member of the Gorham Congregational Church, UCC and was Past President of the Gorham Womans Club. She was awarded the Block M Alumni Award from the University of Maine. Connie will be remembered by the residents of Shelburne for her outstanding flower gardens. She was also very adept at rug braiding, cross stitch, chair caning and was a great seamstress. She enjoyed making several traditional jellies and jams. Members of the family include her daughter C. Ann Leger and her son Lawrence P. Leger, both of Shelburne, NH; several cousins and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Eugene Leger and by two sisters Nancy Philbrook and Helen Philbrook. SERVICES: A private family service will be held at home in Shelburne on Saturday Jan. 17, 2009 . Interment will be in the Wheeler Cemetery in Shelburne. Friends are welcome to call on the family on Saturday Jan. 17 at the Philbrook Farm Inn, after 12:00 Noon. Anyone who wishes may make a donation in her memory to the Lawrence E. Philbrook Family Scholarship, C/O the University of Maine Foundation, 2 Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469-5792. Arrangements are by the Bryant Funeral Home in Gorham, NH.
