Beverly Blair Penney of 17 Shady Drive, Gorham, NH died Saturday, November 23, 2013 at home, surrounded by her family and beloved cat.She was born a long-awaited only child on April 11, 1934 to Mazie (Hickey) and Durward Blair, at home on Norway Street in Berlin, NH. A 1952 graduate of Gorham High School, she was class salutatorian and excelled in drama, music and majorette. She married the love of her life, David T. Penney on May 16, 1953 and became the mother of five. She was runner up in the Miss Paper City Contest of 1951. The winner was unable to attend the Miss NH Pageant, so Bev took her place. Although she did not win the title of Miss NH, she was thrilled to represent the Berlin-Gorham area.She was employed as a telephone operator at the Gorham Bell Telephone office. When her children were older, she began employment at the Appalachian Mountain Club in Pinkham Notch and then as district clerk for the US Forest Service office in Gorham. In 1980, Beverly realized her lifelong ambition of becoming a nurse and graduated from the Berlin Vocational Technical College as a licensed practical nurse. She was employed in that capacity at AVH and St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Home in Berlin. She left nursing to care for her husband in his last illness and later worked in medical records at AVH and the Gorham Medical Center where she made many lifelong friends.Possessed of a lovely mezzo-soprano voice she sang with the choir at Holy Family Church in Gorham for many years and will be remembered for her lovely duets sung in Latin. Beverly also loved theater and participated in several productions of the North Country Players. Music and poetry were a large part of her life and filled the home with music. She was also a published poet.Her last endeavor was a five year final struggle with cancer, which she had beaten many times before. Her courage and tenaciousness in this last battle was humbling. She leaves beloved immediate family members Sharon Penney of Franconia, NH; Cara Penney of Gorham, NH, Daniel Penney and wife Elizabeth of Athens, GA; Jane Penney Legere and husband Ron of Gorham, NH. A proud grandmother of eight grandchildren: Parker Martel, Mitchell Martel, Moriah Penney, Jackson Penney, David Penney, Tayan Penney, Lance Legere, and Kiara Penney and two great-grandsons Trevor Penney and Blake Penney Remillard. Her grandchildren and great-grandsons were the light of her life. She also leaves her beloved cat, Georgia. She was predeceased by her husband David in 1986 and her son Jeffrey in 2005. She leaves her Hickey first cousins and Penney in-laws with great reluctance, as they were so much a part of the fabric of her life. Her many friends were her solace and delight over her lifetime. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 30 at 1 PM at Holy Family Church in Gorham. Relatives and friends may call at the Bryant Funeral Home, 1 Promenade St. Gorham on Friday, November 29 from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM. Interment will be in the Lary Cemetery in Gorham.
