Alan W. Smith, 71, of Gorham, NH, passed away on Tuesday September 8, 2015 at the Littleton Regional Hospital. He was born in Berlin, NH on February 13, 1944 the son of the late William Biron and Marjorie Pascal and moved to Franklin and Northfield area in 1970 and returned to Gorham in 1998. Alan had been employed as a Ridge Runner by the Forest Service, which included taking care of the Dolly Copp Campground, the NH Fish and Game and the NH Department of Resource and Development. He retired from the State of NH after 32 years of service. During his years with the Fish and Game Dept. he was an editor and photographer for the Fish & Game Magazine, photographing search and rescue operations, as well as wildlife scenes. He and his family often cared for young abandoned wildlife before transporting them to the Squam Lakes Science Center in Holderness, NH. Alan was also with the law enforcement division of the OHRV, wrote grants for the snowmobile trails and was very active in the B.O.H. V. and D. R. E. D. Alan loved target shooting, photography, wood carving and any kind of painting and woodworking. Family includes his wife Vivian Hewitt of Gorham, NH; daughters Wendy Stanton and partner Karl Couture of Milan, NH and Janna Downs and husband Jason of Plainfield, NH; grandchildren Gabrielle Stanton, Kostant Stanton, Arianna Smith, Brian Downs and Michael Downs and step-grandchildren Katelyn Couture and Karl Couture, Jr. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday September 19, 2015 at 2 PM at the Bryant Funeral Home, 1 Promenade St., Gorham, NH. There will be no calling hours. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 166 South River Road, Suite 210, Bedford, NH 03110.
